I've started working full-time again. I will be providing assistance to people with special needs for a local care giving organization in independent living facilities and group homes. I'm currently in orientation. A friend of mine has recommended me to his employer for freelance graphics work too. Things are getting back on track. It won't be long before I can afford to join a local dojo or gym.

I've resumed my weight training and will resume my fitness training this week. I should start regular MA training at home next week and keep that up until I join the gym. After that, I'll just do my home training on Saturdays or something. I plan on joining Mcvicker's MA sometime in August. They train in BJJ, JKD and FMA. It's a good school. I hope to eventually earn rank and compete for their teams. It will be a lot of fun.

Mom is in nursing care but I go see her every day. The family is doing well. I should start drawing again this weekend. I plan to have my comic book proposal ready by the end of August.

I'm going to use this blog as sort of a training log.

My dad died Sunday June 4, 2006. I haven't trained for a couple of weeks. I took care of both parents full-time for four years before they moved into assisted living this spring. When Dad's elbow infection flared up again they both got bumped down to nursing care. Then Dad had a heart attack. In addition to that he was fighting two infections, Parkinson's, diabetes, a form of leukemia, arthritis, etc. He held on for a week and a half and managed to speak to us a little bit. Then he and the Lord worked things out and decided it was time to go. He died peacefully. I'll miss him a lot.

Right now I am trying to get my employment situation sorted out. I had to quit my job and pass up three or four jobs while taking care of my parents. I managed to substitute teach here and there, do some graphic work, edit some books and help Dad edit his weekly column but Dad had to cover my bills out of his pensions. It was a lot less than a caregiver or nurse would have cost though. I figure I saved them at the very least $20,000 over the past four years. I worked 40-80 hours a week for them and watched them like a hawk. I love both my parents. I'd have given my life for them at any moment. It was my duty to care for them and I am thankful for the time I got to spend with them.

Dad served on the USS Winslow in WWII. He was a teacher and coach for over 30 years. He was a councilman for 4 years and the mayor of our city for 16 years. He brought jobs to town, cleaned up the town's reputation and appearance, modernized all city departments and put an end to local corruption. He was also a good father and a man of moral courage. He earned anything I did to care for him and a thousand times more.

Even so, it's good to get back to the business of building my own life. I hope to write and draw comic books for a living someday. Right now, I need a job that can pay my bills. I have maintained my training fairly consistently this past four years (mostly fitness) but I want to step that up too. It was a big part of my life from 1982 to 2002 and I'd like to get back to it. One step at a time.

I'll start my weight training up again (after two weeks off) tomorrow. I'll add some cardio this weekend. Then start doing some martial arts drills. As soon as I get regular work, I will be joining this great BJJ/JKD/FMA gym here in town. That's all for now. Later.
